Donations to Niles District Library
Donations to Niles District Library count as "Gifts of Charity" in the Federal Tax Code. Federal law allows for a deduction of the entire donation if you itemize your deductions.
In Michigan, donors receive a credit of 50% of the contribution to public libraries directly off of their income tax after you have taken all your deductions. The credit is capped at $100 for an individual and $200 for a married couple. Business taxpayers can also benefit by making a charitable contribution to the Library and claim a credit against the tax imposed by the Michigan Business Tax Act. As always, it is important to consult your tax expert for information and advice. For more information about this tax credit click here.
Donations made directly to the library will either be used to meet immediate needs of the library or used to help fund our endowment. Larger donations may be designated for a specific purpose such as children's books or audio-books for the hearing impaired.
Donations to Friends of Niles District Library
The Friends of Niles District Library is a 501(c)3 organization and all donations are tax deductible under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
Donations made to the Friends of Niles District Library are used to support the current needs of the library. Each year the Friends donate thousands of dollars to the library to fund special projects and ongoing needs.
Donations to the Niles District Library Endowment Fund
Donations to the Michigan Gateway Community Foundation are tax deductible and qualify for the Michigan income tax credit described above. Checks are made payable to the Michigan Gateway Community Foundation with Niles District Library Endowment Fund in the memo line.
The endowment fund is an important and lasting source of income for the library. The principal is held in perpetuity and the income is distributed to the library on a regular basis.
