Getting a Library Card
You are welcome to visit the Niles District Library at any time, but a world of books, movies, audio books and other resources will be available to you when you obtain a library card. Simply stop by our Circulation Desk to apply. You will need a picture ID with your current correct address. If you have recently moved and your ID has not been updated, bring both your ID and a piece of business mail (such as your electric bill).
In District Residents: Residents of Niles, Niles Township, and Bertrand Township who live in Berrien County are eligible for a Niles District Library card free of charge.
Out of District Residents: If you live outside our district, you may pay for a Subscription Card that offers great value at a low cost: $5 for three months, $10 for six months, or $20 for a whole year.
Children: Anyone under 16 years of age must have their parent or guardian apply for a card, and the adult signing for the card will assume responsibility for the child’s account. To sign up a child for a library card, the responsible adult must have a library card in good standing.
Creating an Online Account
Our online capabilities bring the resources of the Niles District Library and our partner libraries conveniently to your home computer or mobile device. Once you have obtained a library card, accessing your online account is simple:
1) Go to www.Nileslibrary.com
2) Click on Search our Catalog
3) Click on My Account
4) Type your barcode number from the back of your library card into the box without spaces
5) Type in the password you were given when you obtained your library card. You may change the password any time after you have accessed your account.
So that all our patrons may enjoy our collections, some items have limits on how many you may check out and how long you may hold them without renewal. In addition, late fees are charged for each day that each item is late (that’s why we’ve made renewals extra easy!).
|Resource||Limit to Check Out||Check-out Period||Late Fee Per Day|
|New Books||4||14 days||15 cents|
|Other Books||No Limit||21 days||15 cents|
|New Audios||5||14 days||15 cents|
|Other Audios||5||21 days||15 cents|
|Magazines||No Limit||21 days||15 cents|
|New DVDs||2||3 days||$1.00|
|Other DVDs||5||7 days||$1.00|
|Miss Diane’s Toys||1||7 days||$1.00|
Sometimes life gets too busy to finish that book, audio, or magazine you have borrowed from the library. Most items are easily renewable before they are due except for videos, items on hold for another patron, and some inter-library loan items. Items are renewable for one check-out period. You may renew by phone by calling 269.683.8545, or in person by stopping by the Circulation Desk.
Renewing is especially easy online:
- Go to nileslibrary.com
- Click on “Search our Catalog”
- Click on “My Account” and log in
- Click on “View All” next to “Items Currently Checked Out” and check the box in front of the item you wish to renew, then click “Go”
